Louis responded that he did sacrifice by sending money to support Gene, with Gene replying that he believed Louis sent money because he felt guilty for what he did. The two brothers argued before the true source of Gene's anger was revealed – Gene was still bitter that Louis had stolen his chance to emigrate to the US and become successful, claiming that he could've had a better life and that Louis should have sacrificed for him. When Louis told Gene to pay for the piano's damages, as he had just been notified by Jessica that Gene lent her money and that she had paid him back, Gene refused. Returning to the Huang household that night, Gene played with the piano and broke it as a result. While Louis wanted to take Gene out to Cattleman's Ranch Steakhouse, Gene instead made dinner reservations at a fancy restaurant for all of them and paid the bill as well. Gene added that he booked a hotel, but Louis insisted that, since he was family, he should stay with them. He notified them that he was getting married and that he wanted them to attend his wedding in Taiwan, much to Louis' shock. Upon arriving in Orlando, Gene hugged Louis, much to his brother's shock, and met his nephews for the first time. Wanting to bury the hatchet with his brother and have his family at the wedding, Gene, who had his brother's phone number as he still kept in touch with his mother, called Jessica and informed them that he would be flying to Orlando. Gene eventually found employment with Delta Airlines as a pilot and became successful in Taiwan, even becoming engaged to a beautiful model named Margaret. As Jessica did not have money to purchase an engagement ring for Louis, Gene lent her the money to do so, causing Jessica to become indebted to him, although she had no idea that Gene's money was coming from Louis. After Louis became engaged to Jessica Chu, the pair flew to Taiwan to meet with family, and Gene met his sister-in-law. Gene used the money to take various classes and engage in different careers, none of which lasted very long for Gene. Gene struggled to make a living on his own in Taiwan, but was able to keep himself afloat as Louis, believing it was his responsibility as his older brother, sent money back home to support Gene. Sometime later, Gene's mother Jenny left Taiwan and joined Louis in the US as well. Instead, Louis accepted their father's offer and was sent to the US, causing Gene to hate Louis and for the two brothers to become estranged for several years, refusing to be on speaking terms. Louis and Gene both wished to go, but wishing to be polite, Gene offered it to Louis, expecting Louis to refuse and allow his younger brother to go. When Gene and Louis were young adults, their father offered to send one of them to the United States of America, as he did not have enough money to send both of his sons.
